What are Mushrooms


Mushrooms are the reproductive structure of edible fungi that belongs to Basidiomycotina. At present, more than 2000 edible species of mushrooms are known to exists throughout the worid.180 species belonging to 70 genera have been reported from India alone.20 are commercially cultivated Agaricus bisporous (Button mushroom), Pleurotus sajor-caju (Oyster mushroom), Volvariella volvacea (Paddy straw mushroom) are common among them.





Nutritional Benefits Of Mushrooms


  • Mushrooms are good sources of proteins and rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • 20-35% of proteins (Dry weight basis). It is higher than that is found in pulses and soya bean.
  • Contain 9 essential amino acids, rich in lysine and tryptophan.
  • Rich source of vitamins C and B complex.
  • Good source of minerals like P, K, Fe, Cu and Na.
  • K:Na ratio is very low hence ideal diet for patients of hypertension.
  • It’s a low-calorie food with very little fat and sugars, cholesterol, hence good for diabetic
  • Nutritionally mushrooms lie between low grade vegetables and high-grade meats.
