Five Kingdom System
Five Kingdom System
American biologist Robert H. Whittaker in 1969 putfoth five kingdom system for living things, recognizing Monera ,Protista, Fungi ,Plantae and Animalia as a distinct kingdoms. This was done on the basis of their characteristic features such as cell structure ,mode of nutrition, mode of reproduction and body organization.
Monera- includes unicellular organisms, mode of nutrition is absorptive some are photosynthetic bacteria ,prokaryotic ex. Bacteria
Protista- includes mainly unicellular organisms, mode of nutrition is heterotrophic , eukaryotic, Some have a cilia or flagella ,reproduce sexually or asexually ex-Amoeba, Paramecium
Fungi- includes multicellular organisms, eukaryotic , saprophytic mode of nutrition, cell wall is made up of chitin and cellulose ,reproduce vegetatively, asexually or sexually ex-. Agaricus, mushrooms
Plantae -includes multicellular , eukaryotic organisms, autotrophic, contain special cell organelle called chloroplasts ex.-trees , flowering plants like Roses ,Mango
Animalia- includes multicellular, eukaryotic organisms. Cell wall is absent, heterotrophic mode of nutrition.. Sexual reproduction ex- Birds, Fishes, Man
